Ms Mia Luo - International Student Coordinator

With years of experience within the education sector, I firmly believe in the transformative power of education and its potential to impact people's lives. It is this unwavering belief that drives my passion for supporting international students as they start their educational journeys in Australia, recognizing the significant leap they are taking by pursuing studies abroad, far from their
home countries.

Having been an international student myself in Australia, I gained my personal insights into the challenges the international students may face in a foreign land. I deeply empathize with these students and am dedicated to utilize my background and experience to create a welcoming and supportive environment for international students, helping them navigating their educational journey and fostering a sense of belonging and achievement during their time in Australia.

Ramona-Moodley-2021.jpgMrs Ramona Moodley – International Support Teacher

I arrived in Australia in 1999.  The first city I visited was Sydney, but I decided to make the beautiful river city, Brisbane my home.

I had spent many years teaching in South Africa and merely had to transfer my skills and knowledge here.  I enjoy teaching and meeting students and making a difference in their lives.  Here at Sunnybank State High our greatest advantage is that we have a very large multi-cultural community.  Our International Students add to the vibrancy and diversity of our school.  It is always interesting chatting to the students and learning about their cultural backgrounds and experiences.   Working with International Students has enabled me to gain new cultural perspectives and empathy.  It has provided me with new opportunities from celebrating different cultural holidays to sampling new cuisines.

I enjoy working with all our International Students and look forward to meeting our new students.

Ms Aki Blakley - Homestay Coordinator

Ms. Blakley brings a wealth of experience to her role as a dedicated International Student Homestay Coordinator, serving two prominent state schools: Yeronga State High School (Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays) and Sunnybank State High School (Wednesdays and Fridays). Ms. Blakley specializes in facilitating effective communication among international students and homestay providers. Her primary goal is to seamlessly integrate international students into Australian life by thoughtfully matching them with suitable host families.

Ms Clara Yau - Teacher Aid

I commenced working at Sunnybank State High School in 2008 as part of the EAL/D and International Students Program.  During my time here, I have had the pleasure of providing support to students from diverse backgrounds.  I thoroughly enjoy using my language skills to interact with and better understand students and their parents.

Nic Taschke & Naomi Dowden - Guidance Officers

Our Guidance Officers Nic and Naomi are fully qualified counsellors who provide confidential counselling on vocational, educational and personal issues.

Guidance counsellors help empower students to meet the challenges they face, as well as help them cope with complex decision making that comes with adolescence.  This service is provided to all students and their parents or carers on an individual or family basis.

Throughout the year the guidance counsellors help students with career decisions, subject selections and with the applications for universities and TAFE colleges through the QTAC application process. Guidance Counsellors also support students to apply for Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA) in their senior years, to ensure that students are supported to overcome barriers to their ability to complete assessment.
