​Interhouse sporting events include the school swimming carnival, track and field carnival and cross country where healthy inter-house competition is enthusiastically contested.​

Ar​inya

At Sunnybank State High School, Arinya Kangaroos is one of our proud and vibrant House groups, recognised for its strong sense of community, determination, and spirit. The name Arinya is commonly cited in a range of Aboriginal word lists as meaning “kangaroo"—an animal often associated with strength, resilience, and forward movement. Its symbolic connection to progress and perseverance aligns strongly with the values our Arinya students embody.

Arinya House is supported and led by our dedicated Head of House, Erin Garbutt, who works closely with students to build belonging, encourage excellence, and create positive connections across the school. Under her guidance, Arinya continues to grow as a supportive and inclusive House where every student is valued and encouraged to step forward with confidence—just like the kangaroo that can only move ahead.

Balcara

At Sunnybank State High School, the Balcara Bears are celebrated for their courage, unity, and strong sense of pride. The name Balcara, found in several Aboriginal word lists, is commonly associated with meanings linked to strength, protection, and guardianship—qualities deeply reflected in the Bear, a symbol of resilience, loyalty, and standing firm in the face of challenge. These meanings shape the identity of Balcara House, inspiring students to look out for one another and to face every opportunity with determination.

Balcara House is proudly supported by Georgina Leslie-Williams, our dedicated Head of Hou​se, who leads with commitment and care. Georgina works closely with students to build connection, promote personal growth, and cultivate a positive, inclusive House culture. Under her guidance, the Balcara Bears continue to thrive as a united and supportive House where every student is encouraged to be their strongest self.

Co​​olara

At Sunnybank State High School, the Coolaroo Tigers are known for their energy, confidence, and unwavering determination. The name Coolaroo is widely associated with​​​​ meanings linked to home, place, and belonging in several Aboriginal word lists, reflecting a strong sense of community and connection. Paired with the Tiger—an emblem of strength, courage, and focus—the Coolaroo identity represents students who show pride, persistence, and a bold willingness to rise to every challenge.

Coolaroo House is proudly supported by Lauren Wuoti, our dedicated Head of House, who works closely with students to build belonging, encourage excellence, and strengthen Ho​use spirit. Under Lauren's leadership, Coolaroo continues to thrive as a united, resilient, and supportive House where every student is empowered to achieve their best.​

Do​​olamai

At Sunnybank State High Sch​ool, the Doolamai Dragons are known for their bold spirit, creativity, and fearless approach to challenge. The name Doolamai appears in several Aboriginal word collections and is often associated with themes of strength and rising power, which aligns perfectly with the Dragon—an emblem of resilience, wisdom, and unstoppable ene​rgy. Together, these elements shape the identity of Doolamai House: a team that rises strong, thinks boldly, and faces every opportunity with confidence.

Doolamai House is proudly supported by Julie Drury, our dedicated Head of House, who works closely with students to encourage excellence, promote connection, and streng​then a positive House culture. Under Julie's leadership, Doolamai continues to grow as a dynamic, supportive, and high-achieving House where every student is empowered to unleash their inner Dragon.
