Youth Parliament

Four SOSE students recently participated in Youth Parliament at Queensland Parliament House.  Representing the Government, students debated a specially drafted Bill covering community issues, The Community Safety and Protection Bill 2014. The students then participated in that Bill’s passage through all stages of the legislative process, including a proposed Amendment to the Bill and a Division.  The day concluded with an Adjournment Debate where the Youth Parliamentarians spoke on a topic of their interest.

Our four Youth Parliamentarians confidently engaged in rigorous discussions of their chosen areas and were a credit to Sunnybank SHS at this once in a life time experience. So impressive was Tristan Petera’s speech she was selected as “Speaker of the Day – Adjournment Debate”

The Speaker of the House, The Honourable Fiona Simpson MP, made a point of complimenting all students on their performance, awareness and understanding of current youth issues.
